Dylan's Guide to Fast Food #2

This week's Topic - New Employees

This week I was astonished at 10AM to find something that is almost extinct in fast food. A young, white girl walked into the counter area, and started taking orders. Little did I know that we had a new employee that had started working since Tuesday (since I only work weekendss) named Savanah. Now I knew nothing about this girl, but it took all of her first 9 words spoken about an hour after we silently worked together for me to instantly like her more than anyone else currently working at Jack In The Box. After having some trouble with the passing trains and being frustrated by my inability to hear the customers, Savanah walks up to me and asks, "Want me to take the headset for a bit?" I have not had the pleasure of someone asking me this question in months, no one seems to care if I stay in my 5'x3' area taking orders and passing them out (by myself) for about 6-8 hours (excluding my half hour break), but this girl did. I think its safe to say I've found my new favorite co-worker.

That being said, we go through the same process all new people do when they arrive in my familiar third home, a million and a half questions that I'm left to answer (not that I mind, having been there myself). Its around this time that people begin to have much less patience than they usually do, using the new guy or girl as a punching bag for their own personal problems; its always easy to pick on the person who's forced to deal with unpleasant people for $8 an hour. A man walks up and insists that he hasn't gotten a sandwich, a relatively easy problem to fix, just make the sandwich and send him on his way with a free antenna ball. However knowing that this girl is new, the man insists further to antagonize her by insulting her work ethic, and asking to speak to the manager about her indolence.

Consequently, flustered by the situation, Savanah (like anyone in her shoes) starts making mistakes because of the stress something like that will cause. And of course, before handing the fine genteleman his sandwich and apologizing for the incident, I made sure to leave him a surprise or two in his food.

Needless to say, other than that one indicent Savanah knew full well what she was doing, despite being new. Lesson here? Don't mess with the people who handle your food, and don't underestimate the new guy/girl.
